Transforming a complex enterprise web ecosystem into a scalable, governed digital platform built for performance, distributed publishing, experimentation, accessibility, and AI-era discovery.
Overview
As Amplify.com expanded across a growing portfolio of curriculum products, campaigns, content, and customer journeys, the web ecosystem had become increasingly complex to manage and scale. Legacy page structures, inconsistent publishing patterns, technical debt, and growing cross-functional demand created challenges across performance, accessibility, governance, and speed to market.
I led a multi-year platform modernization strategy to evolve the website from a collection of individually managed experiences into a more scalable enterprise digital platform. The work spanned CMS and component architecture, information architecture, performance, accessibility, publishing governance, technical standards, and cross-functional operating practices.
The resulting foundation improved platform reliability and publishing scalability while enabling the next generation of capabilities across experimentation, structured discovery, SEO/AEO, and AI-ready content architecture.
The Opportunity
Amplify.com supports a complex digital ecosystem spanning curriculum discovery, product evaluation, thought leadership, campaigns, and customer engagement. As the organization and its digital needs expanded, the platform needed to evolve with them.
Key challenges included:
- Scaling publishing across a distributed organization of 50+ content editors and 100+ stakeholders
- Moving away from legacy page-building patterns toward reusable, component-based architecture
- Improving platform performance and Core Web Vitals
- Strengthening accessibility across templates and shared components
- Reducing technical and content debt across a large web ecosystem
- Establishing clearer governance for content, media, templates, and publishing
- Creating a technical foundation capable of supporting experimentation and personalization
- Preparing content architecture for evolving SEO, AEO, and AI-driven discovery
Rather than treating these as independent website projects, I approached modernization as an enterprise platform strategy—aligning technology, experience, content architecture, governance, and operating practices around a scalable long-term roadmap.
Strategy
I structured the modernization roadmap around four interconnected layers designed to improve both the platform itself and the operating model surrounding it.
Transformation Timeline
Phase 1 —
Scalable CMS & Component Architecture
Led the transition toward a more scalable Gutenberg-based publishing architecture built around reusable components and standardized page patterns.
This included:
- Establishing reusable component and template patterns across high-priority experiences
- Expanding the platform to 50+ custom Gutenberg blocks
- Reducing dependence on legacy and one-off page construction
- Aligning design, content, and development around shared component standards
- Improving editor autonomy while maintaining platform and brand consistency
- Supporting consolidation and rationalization across a large content ecosystem
Impact: Created a more scalable publishing foundation that increased consistency, reduced one-off development dependency, and enabled distributed teams to build within governed patterns.
Phase 2 —
Performance, Technical Health & Platform Reliability
Established technical optimization as an ongoing platform discipline rather than a one-time remediation effort.
This included:
- Addressing redirect chains, broken links, metadata gaps, and technical SEO debt
- Reducing unnecessary plugin and script dependencies
- Improving Core Web Vitals across priority experiences
- Strengthening HTTPS, crawlability, and platform health
- Improving page-load performance across key customer journeys
- Establishing ongoing monitoring and prioritization practices for technical health
Impact: Improved Core Web Vitals approximately 15%, reduced full-page load time by approximately four seconds, and created a more reliable technical foundation for search, experience optimization, and future platform development.
Phase 3 —
Accessibility & Experience Governance
Integrated accessibility into platform governance, component standards, and publishing practices to make accessibility a sustained operating responsibility rather than a downstream remediation exercise.
This included:
- Leading accessibility remediation planning across templates and shared components
- Embedding accessibility requirements into platform and component development
- Establishing alt-text and content accessibility standards
- Coordinating accessibility statement and governance requirements
- Incorporating accessibility into QA and release practices
- Aligning accessible structure with semantic clarity and machine interpretability
Impact: Reduced identified accessibility issues by approximately 80% while establishing standards designed to prevent accessibility debt from simply re-entering the platform.
Phase 4 —
Enterprise Governance & Operating Model
Established governance and operating practices connecting Marketing, Product, Engineering, UX, Content, Analytics, SEO, and external partners around shared platform priorities.
This included:
- Establishing standardized intake, prioritization, and page-build workflows
- Defining requirements, acceptance criteria, QA, and launch-readiness practices
- Creating publishing documentation and standards for distributed contributors
- Establishing clearer escalation and delivery pathways with Engineering
- Coordinating agency, vendor, and contractor resources against platform priorities
- Introducing governance around media, components, templates, accessibility, and content quality
- Building roadmap and prioritization practices that balanced stakeholder demand with platform health
